The Liebster Award

In a brilliant start to 2016, Tanja from The Red Phone Box Travels (a fellow new travel blogger like me) left me a comment to let me know she’d nominated me for a Liebster Award. The Liebster Awards were set up by bloggers to help other bloggers find and interact with those new to the game. Once you receive a nomination, you need to answer the questions posed by the person who nominated you, nominate 11 other bloggers and think of 11 questions to ask them. It’s an awesome way to find other new blogs and add to my ever growing reading list on Bloglovin!

Here are my responses to Tanja’s questions:

What or who inspired you to start your own blog?

I’d been thinking about writing a blog for a while after getting into reading beauty blogs to start with. I’d started to follow bloggers like The Londoner and A Model Recommends and became more interested in their travel and lifestyle posts than the the beauty ones and gradually found my way to The Travel Hack, World of Wanderlust and Vicky Flip Flop Travels amongst others. After reading as many blogs as I could for about 18 months I decided that I would dip my toe in the water and have a go at it myself, if only as a record and memento of all the places I’ve been.

Do you have advice for someone who wants to start their blog?

Get on with it! Get a free WordPress account and one of the free themes and just start writing content. The next big thing for me was making sure I could get the domain name I wanted for my blog. I had to wait a little while to get all the different incarnations of The Travelling Teacher but I now know I am almost there to securing my blog identity which to me is really important.

What blogs do you follow/particularly like?

As I mentioned above, I got massively into travel blog through the female bloggers at The Travel Hack, Vicky Flip Flop Travels and World of Wanderlust and still look forward to all their new content. I am also a massive fan of all who post as past of the Travel Link Up every month, now run by Angie at SilverSpoon London, Emma at Adventures of a London Kiwi and Jessi at Two Feet One World and previously Kelly from Around the World in 80 Pairs of Shoes and Rebecca at Runaway Kiwi

What are your travel plans for this year?

I’ve already got a fair few plans in place, during the next school half-term I am off to Berlin and Edinburgh and then at Easter we head off to Cuba and will be back in time to get to Cardiff for the Traverse Travel Blogger Conference. 2 weddings will take me to Devon and Tenerife, there’s also a school trip to Venice and hopefully we can put our hard earned Avios points to good use during the Summer Holidays. At the moment Japan is the main contender!

Have you ever done Airbnb?

I haven’t as yet, I do always find lots of great apartments on there but for some reason never seal the deal and book. I should try and use it during 2016.

Who is your best travel partner?

Without a doubt my Husband, we are the ultimate travel companions and have travelled a great deal since getting together. In fact we booked our first holiday after only being together for three weeks! Travel has formed a big part of our lives and was the theme for our wedding, it may be because I am always my most relaxed during the school holidays so feel that the time we spend away is protected time together doing something we both enjoy. Our travels together work because I like to plan and he doesn’t mind going along with what I’ve planned but more importantly we have similar interests when we go away in that we both can’t just sit on a beach for a week. We like to do stuff, which is why we learnt to scuba dive together in 2012 and the majority of our big trips centre around being able to get some dives in.

Is there something you’d never do on your travels? e.g sleep in a tent, eat a scorpion or?

Well I end up sleeping in a tent for at least eight days every year on different school expeditions but I’ve never eaten a scorpion in fact that would probably be something I would never do on my travels. I’m just not into eating anything TOO weird so no bugs for me, the time I ate snails was enough! And as much as I love an adrenaline kick you won’t find me jumping out of a plane or jumping off a bridge anytime soon.

If you could choose any career what would it be?

The one I have is pretty awesome, I love teaching so if I could choose any career it would be doing something else involved in education, possibly abroad or as part of something to change the current education system in England for the better.

What’s your dream destination?

Everywhere ends up becoming my dream destination but at the moment the places I can’t get out of my head are Japan, Australia, India, the Maldives and Copenhagen.

Have you got a pet?

Sadly not. I did have pets growing up (cats and rabbits) but unfortunately the London rental scene doesn’t really allow for those renting to keep pets. Plus it wouldn’t be very fair on any pets we did have as live in a flat and are out at work all day.

What’s the best dessert you’ve ever had on your travels?

Waffle on a stick. Need I say more. Belgian chocolate dipped in hazlenuts draped over the warmest softest waffle you will find in Bruges and all neatly ready to eat on a stick so no sticky hands! I had way too many of these portable desserts during my last trip but still feel like I missed out by not eating more!

My nominations go to the following as I really want to see them answer them answer my questions;

Barb from You Fancy Me Mad – I found this blog through the Travel Link Up and was pleasantly surprised to find so many posts not about travel and more about comics which makes buying presents for my other half much easier on her recommendations!

Japan is quickly becoming my most wanted destination so I will be following Nano at Travel with Nano B closely over the next few months as she posts all about her life there

Fellow Yorkshire girl Emma of Paper Planes and Caramel Waffles isn’t exactly a new blogger but I wanted to include her as it’s a blog I’ve only just discovered.

Claire from Curious Claire Travels is living the single girl travelling dream and started her blog in 2015 just like me.

I love the mother and daughter duo at Sangria and Sunshine, their posts make me want to plan a USA roadtrip immediately.

Another blogger making me wanting to hop across the Atlantic is Road Trip Andy who posts daily updates of his Trek America adventures.

My ultimate dream is to eventually take my family travelling around the world so I have a huge amount of respect for Any Direction We Choose who are proof that long-term family travel can be done.

I love looking through Snow in Tromso‘s Instagram gallery and her posts about life in Nordic Europe are perfect inspiration for anyone wanting to visit.

So bloggers here are your questions which you are more than welcome to respond to, nominate some other new (newish) bloggers and pose your own 11 questions to them…have fun!

  1. What’s your earliest travel memory?
  2. How did you catch the travel bug?
  3. Who would be your ultimate travel companion (can be living or no longer with us)
  4. Your best piece of travel advice (can be something someone has told you or your advice for others)
  5. Favourite movie that inspires you to travel
  6. How do you like to travel? (plane, car, train?)
  7. Where’s the most remote or off-grid place you’ve ever been?
  8. What’s been your worst moment whilst travelling?
  9. Your favourite item of travel memorabilia (travel souvenir?)
  10. What’s your guilty pleasure/vice whilst travelling?
  11. If you could only travel to one more place where would it be?

Once again thanks to Tanja for the nomination, I’ve loved answering your questions and thinking of my own but more importantly (and in the spirit of the award) it’s helped me find more blogs to read!
